“The deeper the blue…” Album | SOMM Recordings

deeper the blue SOMM Recordings’ The Deeper the Blue offers an intriguing exploration of color and timbre in music and a revealing investigation of the connections between four very different composers over a near-100-year period. Taking its title from painter Wassily Kandinsky’s assertion that a deepening color ultimately “turns into silent stillness and becomes white”, the recording illuminates the intimate relationship between student and teacher: Vaughan Williams and Maurice Ravel, Kenneth Hesketh with Henri Dutilleux and the influence on Dutilleux of Ravel.

Augusta Read Thomas Violin Concerto No. 4 (new commission for Janet Sung)
ART
Described by The New Yorker as, “a true virtuoso composer,” Pulitzer Prize Finalist composer, Augusta Read Thomas, will be composing a new violin concerto for Janet.

For the past 30 years, Ms. Thomas has been writing for violin and for orchestra. She and Janet had the opportunity to get to know one another personally over the past few years and worked closely together on the premiere of her work Mansueto Tribute, “Double Helix” (2011). After the premiere of the work at the dedication ceremony of the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago on October 11, 2011, Janet and Augusta were inspired to collaborate again. They are very excited to be working together on this new composition! Stay tuned for more details.
